Company
Hyperbaric Medical Services (HMS), based in San Francisco, California, is a corporation providing patient care and consulting services in the field of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  HMS is closely affiliated with Hyperbaric Consultants Medical Group, a team of predominantly sub-specialty trained, certified and boarded hyperbaric physicians.  With over 30 years of cumulative experience in the field of hyperbaric medicine, HMS brings a solid platform of clinical, administrative and marketing expertise to assist in building a successful hyperbaric program. 

Mission
Hyperbaric Medical Services (HMS) is committed to the delivery of the highest quality, comprehensive patient care in the fields of undersea and hyperbaric medicine and wound care.  We provide state of the art clinical services with full time physician supervision to the Bay area patient population in need. In addition we also strive to provide these services through strategic partnerships, the provision of consultative services and delivering educational opportunities.  In doing so we hope to improve access to optimal hyperbaric medical care for all at risk populations.

Our Team

Dr. Jamie Marie Bigelow, MD, FCCP download biosheet

Dr. Bigelow completed undergraduate work at Columbia University in 1985.  She then attended medical school at the University of Miami in 1990, and residency in Internal Medicine at Harvard University’s New England Deaconess Hospital in 1990-93. She completed fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCSF in 1996. Dr. Bigelow began her private practice in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Saint Francis Medical Center in 1999 and later added Sleep Medicine in 2007.  An enthusiastic diver, Dr. Bigelow became certified in Hyperbaric Medicine in 2000 and worked with Dr. Cianci as a member of Baromedical Associates.  She became sub-specialty board certified in Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine (ABPM) as of January 2011 and served as medical director of the Hyperbaric Department at St. Francis Memorial Hospital from 2011 through 2014.  In addition to Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, Dr. Bigelow is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Nicole Cates, DPM, AACFAS download biosheet

Dr. Nicole Cates is a fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon with years of training dedicated to foot and angle pathology. Prior to practicing in San Francisco, Dr. Cates completed her fellowship at University of Maryland. There she specialized in complex foot and ankle conditions including Charcot neuroarthropathy, pediatric clubfoot, limb lengthening and complex deformity correction under the direction of a highly regarded faculty of fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeons.

Dr. Cates completed her surgical residency at Georgetown University Hospital, where she had the opportunity to train with renowned surgeons in trauma, reconstructive surgery, arthroscopy, sports medicine, and diabetic limb salvage. She received her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California and completed her bachelor’s in chemistry at Clemson University.

Dr. Cates is actively involved in research and has several publications in the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery covering surgical outcomes in Charcot reconstruction and diabetic limb salvage, and innovative surgical techniques. She continues to research new methods and advance the field of foot and ankle surgery in areas like diabetic reconstructive surgery, improving safety of external fixation devices, and diagnostic methods for common deformities. She also lectures at national and local meetings and is an associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Although Dr. Cates is extensively training in foot and ankle surgical reconstruction, she believes it is imperative to exhaust nonsurgical treatment options first. She believes in customized care for each patient with the ultimate goal of return to full activity, and performing daily activities pain-free.

Dr. Roger Friedenthal, MD, FACS download biosheet

Dr. Friedenthal completed his undergraduate work at Stanford University “With Great Distinction” and then attended Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Yale-New Haven Medical Center and completed his residency training in General Surgery at University of California San Francisco Medical Center and Stanford Medical Center. He completed his residency training in plastic surgery at UCSF Medical Center and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He has been Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center, and he is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at UCSF Medical Center. He has been Chairman of the Association of the Clinical Faculty at UCSF Medical center. He has been secretary of the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Brown and Toland Medical Group. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the California Medical Association, and he has served as Chairman of the Council on Scientific Affairs for the CMA. Dr. Friedenthal is an operating room accreditation inspector for the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, and he is an Expert Reviewer for the Medical Board of the State of California. Dr. Friedenthal additionally became certified in hyperbaric medicine in 2017.

Dr. David M. Young, MD download biosheet

Dr. Young is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery and is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UCSF.  Dr. Young is a graduate of Columbia College and earned a medical degree at the Yale University School of Medicine. He trained in pathology at Cornell Medical College and then general surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He then completed an NIH-NRSA funded research fellowship at Yale and a Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.

His area of expertise includes wound healing, and reconstruction after burns and trauma. His research interests include the molecular mechanisms of wound healing and the epidemiology and treatment of soft tissue infections. He is trained in hyperbaric medicine and advanced wound care techniques. He offers total body wound care and addresses failure-to-heal wounds from post-surgical treatments or from trauma. He is fluent in English and Mandarin.

Corryn Barney, RN, LVN, SWOC Wound Care Nurse and Program Manager

Corryn Barney is a dynamic and highly skilled Registered Nurse, specialized in skin, wound, ostomy, and continence (SWOC) care, with over 5 years of certification in this field. Her journey in nursing began with a Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences from California State University East Bay, where she was also a dedicated student-athlete in soccer and track.

Corryn's passion for wound care ignited while working as an LVN in acute care nursing facilities, focusing on geriatric wound care and burn management. This experience inspired her to advance her education and skills by obtaining her Registered Nursing license, deepening her expertise in wound care.

Expanding her scope, Corryn ventured into pediatric home health, specializing in wound and ostomy continence care, mechanical ventilation, and tracheostomy stoma care. This diverse background, combined with her strong educational foundation and hands-on experience in various settings, makes her an invaluable asset to our wound care clinic team.

In her free time, Corryn enjoys unwinding with her two dogs, reflecting her well-rounded and compassionate personality.

Dr. Helen Gelly, MD, FACCWS, UHM/ABPM

Dr. Gelly is board certified in Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine (ABPM) and has been involved in hyperbaric medicine and wound care since 1991. Past positions have included Medical Directorships at academic and community hyperbaric medicine and wound care programs. She started one of the first UHMS accredited, non hospital affiliated hyperbaric centers in the country. Her company has provided hospitals with both management and transitional support. She has been actively involved in billing and reimbursement issues for both facilities and physicians. Until recently, she was the Medical Director of Hyperbaric Physicians of Georgia, a group of physicians dedicated to the practice of hyperbaric medicine and wound healing, with 5 subspecialty boarded physicians in its membership. In addition to lecturing nationally on hyperbaric medicine and wound healing for many years, she was the president of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the UHMS from 2005-2007, and currently serves on the Education Committee and co-chairs the Quality, Utilization, Authorization and Reimbursement Committee of the UHMS. Currently, she serves as the Emeritus Medical Director of Hyperbaric Physicians of Georgia, and as CEO of HyperbarRX.

Ryan Gamlin, Business Development

Responsible for developing and implementing strategies that drive both profit and long-term growth, Ryan is a management consultant with substantial expertise in healthcare strategy, finance, product development, and operations. In industry, Ryan held management roles in large Managed Care and Pharma enterprises, including UnitedHealthcare, Coventry Health Care, and McKesson. As a consultant, Ryan leads strategy and operations engagements in both provider and payor environments, leveraging his experience in both contexts in his role at HMS. Ryan earned a degree in Economics from Miami University’s Farmer School of Business, and recently graduated from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. In addition to his valuable contributions to HMS, he is presently completing his residency in Anesthesiology at UCLA.
